In the picture “The Merry-Go-Round” by Mark Gertler and the poem “Disabled” by Wilfred Owen both have a similar aspect on going to war and the outcome of war.  In the picture, a viewer can see that there are soldiers riding on a merry go round, just like in war there are high points and low points. The men that went to war had to experience how tough war can be and they had to figure out how to survive.   In the poem, a reader can comprehend that this is a guy that has been home from war and has had to get used to not having a leg. This guy has had to get used to people coming in to help him do things every day. Readers can tell he is in a very depressed state of mind.

“A definition of Greatness in Art”  by John Ruskins

In Christ in the Carpenter’s Shop painting, a viewer can tell that a lot of hard work and time to make every detail count was put into making this piece of art.  Just like in “A Definition of Greatness in Art” the author, John Ruskins, stresses the fact that detail in an art piece is key to it being a good piece of art. Both pieces of art tell readers and viewers about the importance of making a good piece of art.  The author of “A Definition of Greatness in Art”, makes sure to make readers aware of the time and effort that artist needs to make great artworks. The artist that painted “Christ in the Carpenter’s Shop”, shows viewers that enough time and effort put into one painting can make a big difference in the outcome.  “Christ in the Carpenter’s Shop” shows Joseph in his carpenter shop with Mary by her son, Jesus. “A Definition of Greatness in Art” the author is telling readers how to make a great piece of art and how much time, detail, and effort that has to go into the art.

In the poems “The Garden of Love” by William Blake and “The Daemon-Lover”, they both show how easy people can fall into love.  In “The Garden of Love” the speaker tells in detail how everything looks and how the character feels. Whereas, in “The Daemon-Lover”, the speaker tells how a person is trying to find a loving wife.  These poems both talk about how a person could love someone else and how a person can get into trouble for loving the wrong person.

In the first stanza, the character in “The Garden of Love” tells readers how everything looks and how everything is.  The speaker says “Where I used to play on the Green”, with this being said, this may mean that the character has been to a place similar to the garden of love before.  With this being said, “The Daemon-Lover” has a similar look at how easy it is to fall into love. The speaker in this poem says “O I’m come to seek my former vows” this meaning that the character in this poem wants to know if his wife still stands behind the vows they made or if she found love with someone else.  Both characters in both poems are trying to seek love and understand what love is.

In the second stanza, things change a little for both characters because they are both figuring out if they are really in love or not.  “The Garden of Love”, the character says that the chapel doors are closed and no one can get in, so the character goes back to the garden of love where there were many flowers.  The character may be in love with someone, but not enough to get married. Whereas in the Daemon Lover, the character tells his wife to make sure to keep the vows she made to him.  The character says “ O hold your tongue of your former vows”, the wife is not to cheat on her husband. Both poems let readers know that if a person is not in love completely with another person, then they should not be married or break their vows if married.  

The third stanza talks about loving another person until the end of their lives.  “The Garden Of Love” talks about how there were “tombstones where flowers should be”. This means that the people in the graves had lived a life full of love.  “The Daemon Lover”, talks about how the wife’s desire to cheat on her husband grew. By saying” If it had not been for thee” meaning if the one person that the wife had her attention on would not have shown up, she still would have been faithful in her marriage. But since she wasn’t faithful in her marriage, the wife will have to live with that for the rest of her life.  Both poems talk about loving someone for all the character’s life, but sometimes other things get in the way.

In both poems, love is what got both characters into the situation they are in.  In “The Garden Of Love”, the character is in love with someone but does not know if marrying that someone is the right choice.  In “The Daemon Lover”, the character has not been faithful to her husband and has fallen for a different guy that she can’t be with.  Both poems can show readers how love is a crazy thing that can get people into trouble.

In this piece of art, James Ward wanted viewers to see how the limestone walls look like they get bigger and bigger with the closer they get to the edges of the painting.  He also shows the walls being very tall by showing all the animals at the base of the limestone being so small. So the James Ward is making this picture seem bigger than what it actually is. Just like in the book Frankenstein, the author Mary Shelley made Victor Frankenstein’s creation seem more scary than what it actually was by showing readers that Victor was afraid of the creation.  This painting and the book have a similar theme of making things out to be a lot different that what they actually are.

The Falling Man Annotated Bibliography

On September 11,2001 the World Trade Center was attacked which lead to many people losing their lives and the whole country in shock about what happened.  There are many different pictures from that day, but one of the more famous pictures is a man falling from the North Tower after Flight 11 crashed into the side of the building.  Richard Drew took the picture that captured the still popular picture of the falling man. Everyone knows about 9/11 and that Al Qaeda terrorist were the ones that hijacked the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center. What happened on that day will never be forgotten and will go down in history as a big event that happened in America. Just like all the pictures that were taken that day, they will never be forgotten either because they show what happened that day.  

The falling man is just one of the pictures that are popular from that day.  This picture is very popular today because no one could identify who the man was or if he jumped or fell out of the North Tower.  To this day, no one has solved the mystery of who the man was but many people have different ideas of who it might have been. Many people have come forward to express the opinions on who the man may be but none of those theories were ever proven true. What a lot of people suspect today is the falling man is a guy named Jonathan Briley.  Each person that has come forward always had different theories based on the way he looked or the clothes he was wearing. All that people truly know about this picture is the way he fell looks like he was falling peacefully to the ground. People also know that he fell out of the Windows of the World floor that was impacted by the crash. Ever since that picture was taken 15 years ago it has been a mystery to everyone.  Out of the 200 people that jumped, he was the one was captured in a picture at 9:41 in the morning. Richard Drew took the picture not knowing that it would become so popular and a big mystery that was never solved. He captured this picture to show everyone a part of what was happening that day and to show what happened to many people.

Anyone that looks at the picture knows that the man looks like an arrow falling from the sky.  Many people say that he looks more like he’s flying rather than he’s falling. A lot of people wonder what actually happened to the man, they want to know if he was pushed, fell out of the building, or was blown out of the side of the building due to the impact of the plane.  The people that look at the photo can see that he was falling perfectly with the towers and it looks like he is splitting the North Tower away from the South Tower. The man is falling headfirst toward the ground which makes the photo more intriguing because he looks at peace as he falls to his death.  Richard Drew took this picture not knowing all the connections people would make to it. A lot of connections have been made to the picture including the man is falling perfectly vertical with the building behind him. The man fell perfectly until he could not be seen anymore. That’s when people knew the falling man was gone.  In other pictures of other people who jumped, they all look like they are struggling whereas the falling man looked like he knew he was going to jump or fall out of the building. In other pictures of people falling out of the buildings, they all look like they are scared and did not have another choice whereas in the falling man picture the man looked like he had accepted his fate.  

Richard Drew has been to history-making events before like when Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed.  He was right behind Bobby Kennedy and was splattered with his blood when he was shot. He automatically started taking pictures there too even though Bobby Kennedy’s wife told all photographers not to take pictures.  With this being said, it was no surprise that Richard Drew was taking the picture of the falling man when the attack started. Richard Drew is a press photo-journalist that knew how to take pictures that people would find interesting.  

In the end, no one knows who the falling man is or what really happened to him. Even though a lot of people have different theories, none of those theories about the man have been proven true.  Richard Drew took a very famous picture of the man falling from the North Tower, which made everyone intrigued by the way the man looked in the picture. In the photo, the man looks like he is flying rather than falling from the building. Everyone that looks at this picture will have a different view on the falling man but everyone will still see a man peacefully falling.

“A Rose For Emily” Textual Analysis

In the short story “A Rose For Emily” by William Faulkner, Miss Emily Grierson knew exactly what she wanted and she got what she wanted one way or another.  Miss Emily lived with her father in the middle of a town so her father could keep her straight. When he died, her world was turned upside down and she would not let people take his body until four men decided to force their way in to get her father’s lifeless body.  After her father died, Miss Emily never left her house, but then when the town decided to get the sidewalks repaved a new guy came to town. This new guy, Homer Barron, was the one person that was able to get Miss Emily out of the house. Over time Miss Emily and Homer Barron became very close and even went on rides through town together.  Miss Emily had fallen in love with Homer and was determined to marry him but he did not want to marry anyone. So to keep from losing him, she killed him and kept his body hidden away in a bedroom she kept locked. She would often visit his body and lay with him in the room that was always locked. Everyone thought he had just abandoned her and went back to his original home.  No one really knew what had happened until Miss Emily had died and some of her cousins found his body in the locked room.

Miss Emily kept Homer Barron’s death a secret for a very long time.  Her family broke down the locked door to see a room full of dust and a corpse lying there in the bed. Her family said “ Then we notice that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head. One of us lifted something from it and leaning forward, that faint and invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils, we saw a long strand of iron-gray hair.”  In this part of the story, everyone was at Miss Emily’s funeral and some of her family members wanted to get answers. This is when her big secret comes out and no one knew what to do or what to say about the body of Homer Barron lying upstairs. Her family was very curious about what was in the locked room upstairs so they took the sheriff with them so he could be a witness when they opened the door.  When they pushed open the door, they found a room in perfect shape with all kinds of wedding items and the corpse of Homer Barron lying there. Everyone thought Homer and Miss Emily had married, but when he disappeared everyone thought he had abandoned her when in reality, Emily killed him so she could be with him forever. The pillow beside him in the bed had a head indention on it which shows that she had visited that room a lot within the years that he had been dead.  It also shows that she laid with his lifeless body very frequently. Her family knew exactly who was laying there dead when they saw the corpse. The family now knew that Homer never abandoned Emily rather than Emily killed him and kept him a secret from everyone. Everyone thought they had married, but no one knew what happened behind the closed doors of Miss Emily’s house.

William Faulkner made a great story by showing readers that people can be very secretive and also be able to keep a reputation just like Miss Emily did in her small town.  No one knew what had happened exactly to Homer until she died and her secret was let out. Miss Emily knew that Homer did not want to marry, but was only there for the publicity that it brought.  She had the motive to kill him for not wanting to marry but no one knew that they only guessed that Emily and Homer were meant to be. The author, William Faulkner, knew that building up the character of Emily would help to show readers who Miss Emily was for the town’s point of view and then Miss Emily’s point of view also.  The town’s point of view is how everyone thought they knew Emily and what was actually going on. Miss Emily’s point of view is when she is the one in charge of what is happening in her life. Readers can conclude that William Faulkner wanted to get the point out that not everything is what it seems and everyone is different when they are around other people.

Dreamland in Portsmouth Ohio

In Portsmouth, Ohio, a soon to be very popular pool was opened named Dreamland in 1929. People that went to the pool say that each year the pool just seemed to get better.  The owner of the pool, Jamie Williams, bought up land all around the pool so he could expand the grounds. He used the extra space to have picnic tables, basketball courts, playgrounds, and to play football.  Dreamland was like a “summer babysitter”, parents would leave their children there while they went to work and would pick them up after work. Children would teach other children how to swim and then the cycle would keep going.  Everyone at Dreamland had fun even the children that had to go mow a lawn to get fifteen cents to get inside Dreamland. Today Dreamland is only a memory to those that had all that fun many years ago.

Dreamland was a very special place for many different reasons for many people.  A woman said, “it was my entire world. I did nothing else. As I grew up and had my own children, I took them too….. the cycle of life in Portsmouth was repeated over and over at Dreamland. (2).”  By this woman telling her story about how she took her children to Dreamland and how the cycle just keeps going. The cycle that most everyone repeated over and over again by taking their small kids and letting them grow up always going to Dreamland.  With this woman always going to Dreamland, she had one perspective on the place whereas everyone had different perspectives. A lifeguard there, John Lorentz, said that working there “was like being the king on a throne(2).” He talked about how much fun it was to see everything that happened there.  He liked working there because he could see just how much people appreciated the pool being here for everyone to come to and have fun. John Lorentz said being a lifeguard was a great job because he could see everyone associating with others. Dreamland would have been a great place for children of today’s society to grow up knowing about.  

Sam Quinones started the book Dreamland talking about Portsmouth, Ohio because Portsmouth used to be a great place for everyone to be able to have fun whereas today Portsmouth, Ohio is split into two sections, the towns with abandoned buildings and the other towns that have memories of what Portsmouth used to be.  Sam Quinones Used the Pool Dreamland as an example of when times were more fun and games but now times are dangerous and deadly with all the drugs that are being used everywhere. From what people have said Portsmouth, Ohio used to be the place that children loved to grow up in.

Dreamland By Sam Quinones

My name is Emily Elizabeth Herman and my favorite things to do is go to football games, be with friends and family, and be around children.   I want to become a doctor when I get out of the Early College.  I want to be able to help people and I want to be able to be around people.  My friends and my family play an important role in my day to day life because they are always encouraging me to do my best and succeed in life.  I love football, it’s one of my favorite sports to watch.  I like to be around children because they always make me so happy, I want to work as a doctor for children when I do get out of college.
